• The Spine
• The Head, Face, Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat
• The Thorax and Abdomen
For EACH musculoskeletal system, you will research and compile the
necessary information (See “Required Information” below) into a research
paper. This research paper, containing the information compiled from all 3
musculoskeletal systems, must be a MINIMUM of 4-5 pages.
Following your research paper, you will create an educational aid which
can be used to briefly summarize each musculoskeletal system as well as
provide a visual of what each system looks like. (See examples of
educational aids below.)
Required Information;
• The Foot
o Major anatomical and functional features of the foot
o Muscles and Movements
o How to prevent Injuries
o Most common injuries & recovery process(es)
o Process of evaluation injuries
• The Ankle and Lower Leg
o Anatomy of the ankle and lower leg
o Major anatomical components of the ankle and lower leg what are
commonly injured
o Assessment techniques of an injured ankle or lower leg
o Common injuries and recovery process(es)
• The Knee and Related Structures
o Structure and functional knee anatomy
o Most common knee injuries and recovery process(es)
o Differences between male and female injuries as related to knee
and ACL
o Knee musculature
o Assessment of knee injuries (different types)
o Prevention of knee injuries
• The Thigh, Hip, Groin, and Pelvis
o Structural anatomy of the thigh
o Proper assessment of an injured thigh, hip, or groin
o Anatomy of the hip, groin, and pelvic region
o Etiology symptoms and signs for the injuries that can occur in the
hip, groin or pelvic region
o Common injuries and recovery process(es)
• The Shoulder
o Critical anatomical features of the four articulations in the shoulder
complex
o Possible steps to take to minimize shoulder injuries
o Explain how the shoulder is maintained by the joint capsule,
ligaments, and muscles
o Anatomical and functional relationship between shoulder stability
and shoulder impingement
• The Elbow
o Structural and functional anatomy of the elbow
o Common injuries and recovery process(es)
o Process for assessing an injured elbow

wrist, and hand
o Process for assessing injuries to the forearm, fingers, hand, and
wrist
o Common injuries and recover process(es)
• The Spine
o Anatomy of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine
o Explain how the nerve roots from the spinal cord combine to form
specific peripheral nerves
o Process of assessing injuries to the cervical, thoracis, and lumbar
spine
o Explain how to evaluate and identify various postural deformities
• The Head, Face, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat
o Anatomy of the head
o Process of evaluation concussions
o Value of neurocognitive test
o Common injuries and recovery process(es)
• The Thorax and Abdomen
o Anatomy of the thorax and abdomen
o Purpose of the thorax and abdomen in its relation to the heart and
lungs
o Location and function of the abdominal viscera related to the
urinary system, the digestive system, the reproductive system, and
the lymphatic system
o Common injuries and recovery process(es)
IMPORTANT: You will need to cite all the sources you used to find
the information. A minimum of 3 sources (published text, scholarly
journals, etc.) are required.
Educational Aid:
You will also be required to create an educational aid to supplement the
information you have researched. Educational aids must include all required information
(refer to above), color, pictures, creativity, organization, and neatness. You must choose
ONE of the following to complete for your educational aid.
• Brochure– Create an informational brochure that could be displayed in a
middle school or at a doctor’s office that would educate readers about
your musculoskeletal system. (Save as PDF before submitting)
• PowerPoint– Create an informational PowerPoint which summarizes the
main points of your research paper, but also provides visual aids to the
reader. (Maximum 15 slides including introduction slide and works cited)
• Educational Handout – Create a double-sided handout (2 pages of a
Word document) that could be handed out as a flyer or displayed at a
