Format and Conventions
The essay should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each one should begin with the first line indented. Indent any paragraphs that aren’t indented [tab the 1st sentence once]. Change the font to Times New Roman size 12. Double Space, 1 inch margins, add a creative and fitting title if you don’t have one. DO NOT quad space in between paragraphs.

Introduction Paragraph: 4–6 sentences
Make sure you have a couple sentences that introduce the book and/or the theme of your essay. Highlight this in light green. There should be around 3-5 sentences.
Locate the thesis statement: Highlight topic one light blue, topic 2 in light purple , topic three in light teal and topic four in light green(you do not need 4 topics). It should be the last sentence of your 4-6 sentence introduction paragraph. If it is not, fix it.
Body Paragraphs: Text Details in MLA format and Commentary [analysis of text]
Does your Topic Sentence in body paragraph one state the FIRST topic listed in your thesis? If not, change it. Highlight it in light blue, it should match the reason in your thesis highlighted in light blue.
Does your Topic Sentence in body paragraph two state the SECOND topic listed in your thesis? If not, change it. Highlight it in light purple, it should match the reason in your thesis highlighted in pink.
Does your Topic Sentence in body paragraph three state the THIRD topic listed in your thesis? If not, change it. Highlight it in light teal, it should match the reason in your thesis highlighted in light teal.

Read the entire essay again. Highlight in light yellow where your Concrete Details [quotes] are. (Remember: these CD’s must be quotes from the novel!) You should have two to four per paragraph. Your quotes should be NO MORE than two lines each, shorten them if they are longer. All quotes MUST have contextual lead-ins. This means that you remind the reader of what was happening in the book where the quote is found. Add this if necessary. Highlight your lead-ins in aqua blue.Your quotes need to be cited in MLA format like so:
EXAMPLE: When Atticus shot the rabid dog, “it crumpled into a brown and white heap on the ground” (Lee 249).
DO NOT list the chapter or page number in the lead in.

Highlight in light orange your BEST two sentences of commentary [analysis] that connect to your thesis per body paragraph. These sentences should CLEARLY support your thesis statement/topic sentence. If you don’t have any that meet this expectation, please revise and/or add them.
To get a 3.4, you need 6 quotes total, and to get a 3.6-4 you need 9+ quotes and each quote should have 2 sentences (3.4) of analysis and 2(beautiful, complex sentences)-3 sentences for a 3.6-
Conclusion Paragraph: 4–6 sentences
Your first sentence should restate the idea of your thesis. Restate = reword it!
Highlight this in yellow.
The next 2-4 sentences should reflect on the supporting points of the three body paragraphs. Highlight these in green.Try to craft the sentences so they are original and bring up the strongest (ethos/pathos/logos) points of your essay. Try and make your audience feel a connection to your essay; leave them nodding their nods saying, “Yes, these are excellent points!”
The last one or two sentences should connect your thesis to the world today, make the reader see the big picture, what matters of human experience apply to our society and world today? What is the lasting truth about human nature? Highlight in orange
