1. Change Leader Interview
For this assignment, students are asked to conduct an interview with an
organizational/institutional leader with whom they identify. The purpose of the interview is to gain insights from the leader about their experience guiding any area of change within their organization. This will be an opportunity to explore what went well, what was challenging, the lessons the leader learned about themselves in the change management process, and advice the leader may have for other change leaders.
Students may choose for their interview any person within an organization who has experience with identifying a problem area, advocating for change, and/or implementing the change. The interviewee may hold any position within the organization; we are all leaders in some capacity. The change outcome could have been successful or unsuccessful; we learn from our wins and our losses. Students are encouraged to take in diverse perspectives for this project and interview leaders who hold different leadership positions than themselves. For example, if a student is an executive leader, they should interview a middle manager. If a student is a middle manager, they should interview a senior leader. Students may choose to interview someone within or outside of their current organization.
Students will submit a 5-6 page paper based on their interviews. Students should summarize insights gained from their interviews and reflect on its relevance and application in their own leadership roles. Some questions to consider for your interview:
● Tell me about an experience you have had with advancing change in your organization.
● What was your role in the change process, and how did you engage with others within
your organization around this change?
● How did you persuade and build consensus within your organization?
● How did you manage resistance to the change?
● Did you reach the desired outcome? Was the change sustainable? What might you do
differently as you look back at the situation?
● How have dynamics of personal identity and organizational power and hierarchy
impacted your change leadership?
● What have you learned about yourself and others regarding change leadership?
● What advice would you offer to other change leaders?
