Research Question
Note: This is the first of five assignments that culminates in the course project. Please review the course project information at each step so you may keep in mind your final goal.
Introduction
Research often begins with a compelling question that inspires curiosity. The research process itself is also shaped by the question we use to begin our investigation. The more focused our question, the more direction it will provide our research process.
Instructions
Choose a research question on which to focus your investigation of a community-based problem for your course project and submit it to your instructor for approval. In your paper, also explain how the proposed research question relates to your own personal experience, how it applies to professional practice, and how social psychology theory applies.
Your research question should be related to a community-based problem, addressing a relationship between a social setting (such as workplace, family, or peer group) and formation of the self. It should also address a community-based problem that affects populations with diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values. Some example questions are:
How does one address the social conflict around a national issue such as immigration?
How is a family impacted by grief?
How do gender roles and stereotypes impact success in the classroom?
How do race relations impact success in the classroom?
How have roles of the elderly changed in the past 50 years?
How does social class impact educational and career opportunities?
How does a college student’s peer group influence alcohol use?
How does group behavior impact personal political opinions?
How do social relations such as aggression and altruism function in the workplace?
To help develop your project, your question might consider the following:
Systems of social behavior, including the historical and cultural perspectives of individuals, which are viewed as models for understanding social behavior.
Social psychology theories, including role theories, learning theories, and cognitive theories.
The nature and awareness of the self.
Social perceptions and understanding others.
Social relations such as affiliation, aggression, altruism, or others.
Social psychology and law.
Social psychology and mental health.
Conflict and conflict resolution.
The power of the situation.
The individual’s construction of his or her own social reality.
The power of the group.
The potential for applying social psychology to real-world concerns.
Other aspects of social psychology.
Also explain how the proposed research question relates to your own personal experience, how it applies to professional practice, and how social psychology theory applies.
