Jacob Kendall Hey Class, For this weeks discussion we are reading about how genders and how gender roles have changed and evolved over time. In the 1950’s it was pretty much a whole different world. People being openly gay or even the thoughts of choosing ones gender was greatly forbidden. Acts like sex for pleasure, just weren’t seen as acceptable. Sex and sex appeal in public were seen looked down upon, and it definitely wasn’t exposed on media It wasn’t until after WW2 that things started to change. “Suddenly men and woman could have sex together for fun with substantially less fear of an unintended pregnancy or pregnancy-induced marriage.”(Wade & Ferree, 2019). In the 1950’s womans rights were greatly less then males and if you were homosexual, it would get you banned from places. Changes sinces the 1950’s have completely revamped how families act and their whole struture. In history, woman’s were typically stay at home mothers and the husband or males of the family were always the ones going to work. However in todays culture, woman work just as much as men. “Today only 20 percent of all mothers are stay-at-home moms with a working husband. In fact, nearly three-quarters of all moms, including almost two-thirds of moms with preschoolers, are in the workforce.”(Wade & Ferree, 2019). In history, some of the struggle, woman faced were, looked as weaker and less fit to perform white collar jobs. This applied to many manufacturing jobs, however as time went on, woman are now accepted in these jobs more, and even run manufacturing companies. Men that stay at home, are seen as how woman used to be looked at, as less manly and less able to provide for their families. One of the “sexual double standard.” that has changed since the 1950’s is the genders sex appeals. In history, men were sexually objectified and woman, were never allowed to show many forms of sexual expression. However, in todays culture, woman are sexually objectified more and tend to show more sex appeal then men. References Livingston, G. (2014, June 5). Growing number of dads home with the kids.
