For your research paper, you will conduct a researched revision of one (or at least one) of the Short Papers that you wrote previously in the semester. The goal is to use the short paper as a starting point from which you can:
refine the ideas that you explored in your short paper
expand upon the ideas that you explored in your short paper through the development of additional examples or further, focused discussion of the examples that you have already developed
expand upon the original ideas by incorporating thoughtful research
expand upon the original submission by either combining more than one short paper or by incorporating discussion of an additional assigned text
Your research for this can take a variety of different forms, depending on the topic that you choose to pursue (on which, more below). You must have a minimum of two research sources and one literary text.
If you are going to combine more than one of the Short Papers, your goal should be to develop a coherent, fluid essay, and that will not come from simply combining two pieces that you had written previously and adding a little bit of research. The revisions to earlier compositions should be substantial with an emphasis on developing a fluid conversation about the themes and the texts. When combining compositions that were previously written as separate assignments, crafting effective transitions should be a point of emphasis. Other important points of emphasis should be the overall organization of the composition (generally it isn’t effective to just paste one paper after the other), your introduction, thesis statement and conclusion all of which will need either heavy revision or complete rewriting in order to bring the various required elements together, and consistency in the way that you address the texts.
Whether you are combining previous submissions or focusing entirely on one:
-Identify the text or texts that you are most interested in working with
-Identify the thesis statement from your Short Paper and determine if it will work for a longer, research-based paper. Adjust the phrasing or the scope of the essay as necessary to meet the appropriate level of formality for a research paper (phrasing) and ensure that you are examining a topic that there will be an appropriate amount of content (scope).
-Consider a variety of different approaches that you can take to the introduction to really grab your reader’s attention. Don’t dismiss the possibility of using personal narrative as a way of introducing a topic that is relevant to the text and subsequently pivoting to a discussion of the text (just make sure that you do pivot to a discussion of the text and that you don’t let your personal experiences take over the discussion).
-Consider how and where to expand your essay. What areas of the current essay deserve additional attention? Are there aspects of the text that you didn’t discuss in your short paper that you would like to? Do those aspects work within the scope of your thesis? Is it possible to adjust the scope of your thesis to include those other elements?
-At some point after you have a thesis statement that you feel comfortable with, start the process of locating your sources by visiting the library website. Avoid lit. guides, and free online essays that may or may not be reliable. Sources provided through the library are already vetted for the most part. The database JSTOR tends to be an excellent resource for research in the humanities. Remember that the point or purpose of research is to develop your ideas, not to summarize what other people have said about the text that you’re writing about. Your thesis, the idea that guides your essay should be your own. Remember that your sources don’t have to be specific to your primary text. There are a lot of really good essays about feminism, to use just one example, that you could refer to in developing a discussion about feminist themes in one of the works that we’ve studied this semester. Similarly, you could explore anti-capitalist or postcolonial themes in Exit West without necessarily having to find an essay that specifically refers to Hamid’s novel. You should use your research to push your claims forward and establish a general framework for your discussion, but you need to remember that the discussion must be driven by your ideas. Because of the importance that I’m placing on developing your own ideas, it may actually be much easier to apply general sources than it is to incorporate sources that relate directly to the texts that you are analyzing. Remember also that research is about learning, not about checking a box. Research assignments are designed to encourage thoughtful engagement with your sources and independent learning, so while, yes, you are looking for quotations that you can incorporate into your essay to support your claims, you’re looking to learn from your sources more generally.
-Dedicate your essay to the close, careful study of the selected primary text or texts, go deeper than plot, fully develop the topics that you choose to explore.
-Think about your conclusion as an opportunity to do more than summarize points that you’ve already made. If your essay is a plane, it should still be the same plane when it arrives at its conclusion, but it should be somewhere different than where it started.
-At some point, you’ll need to come up with a really great, original, engaging title for your essay. I often come up with the title first, but I know many writers who like to circle back to the title after they’ve written their essay. This is a matter of personal preference, but what’s important is that you don’t call your paper “Research Paper” or “Who is Like God” or “Research paper about Exit West” as none of those titles are particularly engaging.
Remember that
short story titles should be enclosed in quotation marks in MLA format, that short stories have authors, and that the story is told by the narrator
play titles should be italicized in MLA format, the author of a play is generally referred to as a playwright (although author is also acceptable), and that the action is driven by the character dialog and sometimes stage directions there is no voice that functions as an analog to the narrator or speaker
novel titles should be italicized in MLA format, the author of a novel is generally referred to as a novelist (although author is also acceptable), and the story is told by the narrator
poem titles should be enclosed in quotation marks in MLA format, that the authors of poems are generally referred to as poets (poet is much preferred to author, author is not as acceptable a synonym as it is for novelist or playwright), and the poem is communicated by a “speaker.”
