Emily
Balcetis tells us in her TedTalk that some people find it harder to
exercise than others due to perspective and perception. The speaker
explains that people who had higher hip-to-waist ratios saw a distance
as physically further than those with a lower ratio. She also explains
that this extends to our minds and whether we have higher or lower
motivational levels.
The speaker explains that having meaningful
and achievable goals can lead us to have a higher ability to perform
physical exercise. Being unmotivated will increase the perceived and
actual effort it takes to perform the task. This is not only true when
it comes to exercise, but can be applied to any task.
We learned
that the “Keeping your eye on the prize” philosophy works by minimizing
distractions and lowering the objective nature of the activity. By
drowning out the outside factors and focusing on the task at hand our
motivation increases. When we teach ourselves to view the world
differently we can change our natural perceptions.
