Part 1 Instructions
This week, we discussed 5 “built-in” biases: Naive Realism, Confirmation Bias, Egocentric Biases, Negativity Bias, and the Bias Blind Spot. In this discussion, I want you to post about a time in your life you or someone you know fell victim to one of these biases. Confirmation bias is likely the easiest topic to choose for this assignment, but if you spend some time thinking about the others, you may find examples of those as well.
Submissions
Make an original discussion post describing a time you or someone you know engaged in one of the built-in biases discussed in class. This part should be at least 20 sentences 3-5 for each heuristic.
Part 2Heuristics
Please do this part on a second page
Heuristics are shortcuts used to make quick decisions about how to behave in a new situation. Technically, each situation you find yourself in is a new situation, but you usually know the appropriate way to behave because you have seen similar situations in the past. You don’t typically spend a lot of time thinking about every decision you make. Instead, you only devote this “mental energy” to situations that catch you be surprise. In social psychology, we have identified many energy-saving shortcuts (heuristics) for behavior under specific circumstances. For this assignment, you will come up with examples of three types of Heuristics: Representativeness Heuristic, Availability Heuristic, and Authority Heuristic.
Representativeness Heuristic – The representativeness heuristic is used to help people categorize situations and people when we want to predict how they will behave. Categorization is useful because we often treat people differently depending on their category. For example, you act differently around students compared to professors. The Representativeness Heuristic suggests that when we aren’t sure what group a person is in, we see what category they most resemble. If they look like a good representative of a category, we expect them to act like the members of that category, and we treat them accordingly. The same is true for situations. If many aspects of a situation are similar to a category you’ve experienced before, you may expect this situation to play out in the same way. In either case, you will adjust your behavior in preparations for the predictions you have made.Availability Heuristic – This heuristic is about how easily you can recall different types of events. Events that are easy to recall (i.e., easily “available” to our minds) will seem more common than events that don’t stick out as much. This heuristic is often used in potentially dangerous situations. People are commonly on alert to danger and harmful events are easily remembered. Therefore, people often overestimate the likelihood of these terrifying events.Authority Heuristic – You might be able to guess this one. The Authority Heuristic is about believing people’s opinions because they are in a position of authority. Like all heuristics, this is not always a bad idea. For example, children must trust the word of those in authority, if they are going to learn about the world. However, this heuristic can cause people to believe people who are not experts in the relevant field or who have not gained their authority honestly.
