It can be difficult to engage a client during the initial consultation, and there are many aspects that go into developing a strong rapport and level of trust between the therapist and the client. In general, the goal of the initial interview is to learn about, elaborate on, and talk about the clients’ problems and how they typically encounter them. Counselors are also supposed to make clients feel at ease when disclosing private information about their lives to an absolute stranger, hence the importance of establishing a secure environment where the client can speak freely, and start setting the basis for a therapeutic relationship with the counselor. Also, the counselor should be aware of his/her biases, in order to consider the client’s cultural background as well. In conclusions, based on the interview’s content, methodology, and nonverbal indications, the clinician will learn a lot of information during this initial meeting with the client, depending on how at ease and secure the latter feels around his/her provider.
