Purpose
For Essay #2, I want you to focus on a topic that is interesting to you and is a topic in environmental science you want to explore further.
Task
1) Students will first choose one of the following sectors: energy, food, agriculture, or water.
2) Then, students will choose an area of focus within the sector chosen. For example, if you chose “food,” you could focus on fisheries, plastic wrappers, take-out culture, plastic cutlery, plant-based diets, food transportation, etc. Or if you chose “energy,” you could discuss nuclear energy, wind energy, hydro energy, etc. Overall, I want you to select a topic that you are interested in exploring further.
3) Next, once an essay topic is chosen, students will write an essay that addresses the following bullet points :
Make an argument in your paper (e.g., fisheries are detrimental to freshwater sources).
Describe the sector and essay topic chosen.
How is your topic related to climate change (e.g., solar energy can replace fossil fuel usage)?
Is your topic a solution (e.g., solar energy) or a problem (deforestation) for the environment? If it’s a solution, then describe why it’s a solution. If it’s a problem, then discuss potential solutions to this problem.
If applicable, discuss how your topic relates to the Las Vegas Valley.
