Purposes of the Assignment:
—- To expand our exploration of LGBT legislation as touched upon in Mark Segal’s memoir and his recent lecture at Elmhurst University in light of a very recent Congressional bill.
—- To think critically about a controversial issue in our society today.
—- To articulate complex arguments.
Directions:
Read the H.R. Bill cited as “ Stop the Sexualization of Children Act.”
Explore the controversy over the newly proposed House of Representatives bill entitled “Stop the Sexualization of Children Act” by reading two or more articles from different viewpoints. (See the media bias chart. Use our library or other libraries’ databases to find appropriate articles.)
Then do ONE of the following in 1200 words:
Write a “white paper”* (see definition below) that lays out the arguments on each side with the intent of creating a useful resource for voters to be informed in the issue. This type of document tries to maintain as neutral a stance as possible.
OR
Write a letter to your own Congressperson (address them by name or look them up if you are unsure of your current U. S. Congressional representative) arguing for them to vote for or against the bill, if it is brought to a vote on the floor. Be careful to offer sound arguments for your position, including rebutting counter-arguments; quote outside materials to help support your position, as needed.
NOTE: In either case provide a reference list for the articles you consulted.
