If the given median is $1.9m then for the most part, you can say that roughly half the homes will cost less, and the other half will cost more. A median in a dataset is found by eliminating the lowest and highest values in the set until a middle value is found. Such as:
$900,000
$1.3m
$1.5m
$1.7m
$1.9m
$2.2m
$2.3m
$2.3m
$2.6m
With that example you can see the exactly half the homes cost more, and half cost less.
Although once you start introducing repeating values, things can change a little. For example, when surveying a neighborhood, you may have multiple homes that are valued at the same price.
$1m
$1.2m
$1.4m
$1.6m
$1.9m
$1.9m
$1.9m
$1.9m
$2.2m
This set has $1.9m as the median value. When you look at what goes on around it though, you’ll see that 4 homes cost less than the median and only one costs more. That value of $1.9m does technically fall in the middle of the dataset but its not balanced in a way where half of the prices are lower, and half are higher. You can take the mean of this dataset by adding all values and dividing by the number of homes.
A tie in the dataset would be if there were 2 middle values left when trying to find the median. In this case, you would take the mean of those middle values by adding the two up and dividing by two. A tie would only affect the median drastically if the middle two numbers were far apart. For example, you can survey the ages of people in a doctor’s waiting room. It may be,
3,8,11,32,35,36. The median would be 21.5 something no one else approaches by roughly 10 years.

Find an article that mentions a new drug that promises an improved survival rate.
Identify whether this rate represents the mean or the median of the data set.
In the article I found for this week discussion post they give insight on AML which is Acute myeloid leukemia. AML is first present in the bone marrow and eventually ends up in the blood stream at a very fast pace. Physicians have recently come across a drug called CC-486. This drug was brought to their attention by researchers from Monash University.
In the trials researchers examined 472 patients with AML. Through the trial the patients were given CC-486 pr a placebo which is as “an inert or innocuous substance used especially in controlled experiments testing the efficacy of another substance “Merriam-webster (2022). A very important factor of CC-486 and the placebo was that those on the generic medication had a average life span of 15 month when those taking CC-486 had an average survival of 25 months. I feel that based on the clinical trials the data set represents a median.
Assess whether that is ideally what you’d want to know for this data.
The information was helpful in bringing attention to this new drug but did no provide enough information.
Provide a specific reason for your answer.
The article did not give actual numbers on how many people live longer and healed completely out of the 472 patients that were tested. If they were to present numbers such as 410 or %87 percent of individuals lived longer or improved I would lean more towards a mean.
