INTRODUCTION
“It’s not that I am feeling sorry for them or empathizing with them, it’s that I’m becoming them.” -Dr. Frank Ochburg, Former Associate Director, National Institute of Mental Health.
Have you ever thought; “I can’t do this anymore, their stories are just too hard.” Or have you known a colleague who had similar thoughts? Imagine a counselor entering a session with a traumatized client and having these thoughts. What impact might it have on the counseling process? Could this counselor be professionally impaired?
This week you define an impaired counselor by examining the American Counseling Association and American School Counseling Association ethical guidelines. In addition, you explore how impaired counselors affect the counseling process and your ethical responsibility to address impaired counselors with vicarious trauma.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
Analyze the ACA/ASCA code of ethics
Apply the ACA/ASCA code of ethics to counselor impairment
Analyze the effects of counselor impairment on the counseling process
Analyze ethical responsibility related to counselor impairment as counselor, counselor educator, and supervisor
Analyze behavior of an impaired counselor
Justify strategies to address vicarious trauma symptoms of an impaired counselor
Justify strategies to promote future self-care and wellness
MASTER’S STUDENTS
BY DAY 3
Post your brief description of the scenario you selected. Then explain at least one possible impairment exhibited by the counselor due to vicarious trauma and the impact it may have on the counseling process. Then, as a counselor, explain how you might address the impairment. Be specific and provide examples referencing at least one sub-section of the ACA code of ethics or one sub-section of the ASCA code of ethics. Then include two self-care strategies you would recommend to the supervisee to promote their personal wellness in the future. Justify your selection. Be specific. Respond to a colleague who selected a different impairment or the same impairment referencing a different section of the code of ethics. Identify yourself as a master’s student at the beginning of your post.
