My most recent day in practice that I can visualize is with one of my patients who is battering depression. My aspirations as a psychiatric nurse are to always support my patient, Nursing management of patients suffering from depression generally includes emotional support. My ideology is support involving facing the patients as individuals, increasing their feelings of safety, reducing their anxieties, and increasing the patients’ trust and faith in the future.
My aspirations and ideologies shape the way I relate to the therapeutic role of nursing staff in mental health care which is especially pertinent in settings such as inpatient wards, where patients interact with nurses for the largest proportion of time, and the relationship with them are cited as key to therapeutic progression. The therapeutic alliance is a core part of the nursing role and is key to the attainment of positive outcomes for people utilizing mental health care services.
All of this tells me that I have the capacity to continue to provide my patient with a safe and therapeutic place for them to vent their frustrations and fears and receive comfort and encouragement. With the proper depression support, along with medication and talk therapy as necessary, my patient can get started on the road to a meaningful and fulfilling life without suffering from feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness.
Comprehensive primary mental health care services in promoting optimal mental health and preventing mental illness. Hence, self-awareness, empathy, emotional support, and moral integrity enable the psychiatric nurse to practice the use of self artfully in therapeutic relationships. Good emotional, psychological and social, spiritual help do much better than those without it. (Kneisl,Wilson&Trigoboff,2020)
