The study I chose is a randomized clinical trial (RCT) that investigated the effect of long-term oxygen supplementation on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with moderate at-rest desaturation or exercise-induced desaturation. The study addressed a focused research question where the population was identified as patients with COPD and moderate desaturation at rest or exercise-induced. The intervention was defined as long-term oxygen supplementation. While the comparison group was defined as patients without long-term oxygen supplementation. And the outcome was defined as the incidence of death or first hospitalization (“A Randomized Trial of Long-Term Oxygen for COPD with Moderate Desaturation,” 2016).
A total of 738 patients were randomized to either the intervention or control group in a 1:1 ratio. The randomization was not concealed as the intervention was hard to conceal. Therefore, neither the patients nor the investigators were blinded in respect of the participant’s allocation. The study was a parallel-group RCT which means that groups did not exchange intervention, and each patient remained in the same group for the rest of the study (Siepmann et al., 2016). Moreover, the study utilized intension-to-treat analysis which is suitable to study the effect in real-life circumstances (Tripepi et al., 2020).
Both groups were similar at the start of the study in terms of baseline characteristics. Moreover, besides the intervention of concern, both groups were treated similarly. However, the study investigators did not state the defined protocols in case of loss of follow-up or contamination. Furthermore, the study’s primary outcome was death or first hospitalization which was measured through randomization by using Cox proportional hazards model. In addition, the long rank test was used to attain significant values (p-values).

Locate a research study that utilized experimental or quasi-experimental methods. Briefly summarize the study. For example, discuss the inclusion of 2-group tests, regression analysis, and time-series analysis in terms of the study design’s strengths, weaknesses, or limitations. What challenges or limitations did the researcher identify they encountered by choosing this method?
Embed course material concepts, principles, and theories (which require supporting citations) in your initial response along with at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article. You are required to make your initial post (create thread) in order to see others posts and make comments. You are required to reply to at least two peer discussion question post answers to this weekly discussion question and/or your instructor’s response to your posting. These post replies need to be substantial and constructive in nature. They should add to the content of the post and evaluate/analyze that post’s answer. Normal course dialogue doesn’t fulfill these two peer replies but is expected throughout the course. Answering all course questions is also required.
