PART 1
Most people we will assist are of cultures and ethnicities different from our own. Our population is diverse. This week’s readings address the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship with clients that incorporates a client’s diversity and culture. Relational Cultural Theory gives a theoretical framework for doing so.
For this initial response:
Discuss your thoughts on the importance of relationships with persons of diverse cultures other than your own in social work practice. Support your thoughts with examples from your own professional experience. You may also describe professional experiences you expect to have in the future.
How is Relational Cultural Theory important to your practice with a client of a culture other than your own?
PART 2
“A definition of …cultural humility places emphasis on a particular orientation toward others (or “ways of being”), rather than mastery of a set of competencies (or “ways of doing”) in working with others.”
(Hook et al., 2013; Sue & Sue, 2016; Walters et al, 2016 as cited in Abe, J, 2020).
Discuss what being culturally humble or cultural humility means to you.
How will you demonstrate cultural humility in your social work practice?
PART 3
Read the Gregory & Clary article “Addressing Anti-Black Racism: The Roles of Social Work”. Reflect on the significance of the information for your professional self. How have your thoughts changed regarding structural racism? More specifically, how have your views changed on the role social work plays in addressing structural racism?
There is no length requirement for your submission to this journal; however, your reflection must demonstrate comprehension of main concepts and how they apply to your social work practice.
