Every year Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) puts out an energy flow chart illustrating the U.S. energy consumption by sector and resource type. Below is the 2021 U.S. Energy Flow Chart:Energy flow chart showing relative distribution of energy resource contribution and sector.
**For our purpose, we’ll round the Quads from 97.3 to an even 100 — that way the values in the chart represent relative percentages.
As you can see, electricity generation accounted for roughly 37% of the U.S. energy consumption in 2021. The energy resources used to generate electricity (and their relative percent contributions) included the following: solar (1.0%), nuclear (8.13%), hydro (2.27%), wind (3.32%), geothermal (0.14%) natural gas (11.6%), coal (9.47%), biomass (0.44%), and petroleum (0.2%). An important note is the amount of rejected energy — two-thirds of the electricity generated was never used (23.7%)!
Nearly one-quarter of our electricity generation comes from fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, natural gas). Fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources, and their consumption introduces carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) into the atmosphere.
What would be your ideal energy mix for electricity generation here in the U.S.? Provide your energy mix with resource contributions adding up to 100%. Do you think your proposed energy mix is sustainable?
**When describing your selection, be sure to include the following information:
Descriiption of your energy mix and why you chose this particular distribution.
Descriiption of the sustainability of this proposal.
Discussion of two classmates’ topic, including at least one advantage and disadvantage of their proposal.
A list of your sources and include in-text citations of where you used information from your sources.
